Buying Hemp Clones Across State Lines

With all of the regulations on industrial hemp production, you want to be sure to get your clones from a reliable source in an approved way. Sometimes that means looking out of state for the best provider. That’s why we’ve put together a brief overview of what you should know when buying hemp clones across state lines.

The short answer is, in almost every case, it is okay to buy hemp clones from out of state. Other hemp products may be regulated differently, and you should check with your state regulations before purchasing any other products. But most of the time, hemp clones can be purchased out of state, at least under certain circumstances. However, states do still regulate industrial hemp clone sales. So keep reading for more information on what you’ll need to know before making an order.

Regulations: Which Cultivars You Can Grow, Not Where You Buy Them

Most states (where growing industrial hemp is legal) have rules to dictate which cultivars can be grown; they don’t necessarily regulate where you’re allowed to purchase your clones. This means that in most states, buying hemp clones across state lines should be no problem. Just make sure your state approves of your cultivar!

Additional Documentation for Buying Hemp Clones Across State Lines

Some states require additional documents, like a state phytosanitary certificate, to accompany hemp clones that arrive from out of state. This extra documentation is necessary in Florida, Texas, California, and Delaware, among others. Be sure to check your own state’s regulations before you order hemp clones from out of state.

COAs from the Hemp Clone Provider

Your state is likely to require COAs or a COA history of the variety from your clone provider. Make sure your provider can offer this documentation for each cultivar you order from out of state. Further, your state will want to know how the hemp clone provider operates. For example, we currently operate under the North Carolina State University Pilot Program. As a result, almost any clone variety or cultivar we offer can typically be approved in most states without much hassle. Each buyer must consult his own state for exact requirements.

As you make plans to buy hemp clones for your industrial hemp fields or greenhouses, you must know what your state requires before you make a purchase. You may need to fill out additional paperwork or inquire with your local extension to confirm the viability of your planned cultivars in your state. Not planning ahead can create a headache for everyone involved.

Recently, we received an order for hemp clones which we completed and had ready to ship. As I was heading to the USPS, our customer called to tell me that he hadn’t received approval yet for the variety. That blew my mind! We had to unbox the order and refund the customer, wasting his time and ours. Always check and get approval if necessary before placing an order with your hemp clone provider.
